Hamas Welcomes Trump’s Reversal on Gaza Displacement

- Hamas welcomes Donald Trump’s apparent reversal on the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza.
- Arab foreign ministers meet with US envoy to discuss Gaza reconstruction and future administration.
- Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) adopts Arab League’s plan to rebuild Gaza under the Palestinian Authority.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem has welcomed what appears to be a reversal by United States President Donald Trump on his earlier proposal to permanently displace over two million Palestinians from Gaza.
Qassem’s remarks followed Trump’s statement on Wednesday, in which he said, “Nobody is expelling any Palestinians from Gaza,” while speaking at the White House alongside Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
“If President Trump’s statements indicate a retreat from any idea of displacing the people of the Gaza Strip, we welcome them,” Qassem said in a statement.
He further urged that this position be reinforced by compelling Israel to adhere to all terms of ceasefire agreements.
Trump’s initial comments last month, in which he suggested a U.S. takeover of Gaza and the forced relocation of Palestinians to neighbouring countries, had sparked widespread condemnation across the Middle East.

His apparent shift in stance came as Arab foreign ministers convened in Qatar on Wednesday to discuss Gaza’s reconstruction with U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.
The meeting included representatives from Qatar, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the Palestine Liberation Organization, according to Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The Arab foreign ministers discussed the Gaza reconstruction plan, which was approved at the Arab League Summit held in Cairo on March 4, 2025,” the ministry said in a statement.
“They also agreed with the U.S. envoy to continue consultations and coordination on this plan as a foundation for reconstruction efforts in the region,” it added.

Meanwhile, the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has formally adopted the Arab League’s reconstruction proposal during an emergency meeting in Saudi Arabia. The initiative, led by Egypt, aims to rebuild Gaza under the administration of the Palestinian Authority, countering Trump’s earlier suggestion of U.S. control and mass displacement.
