The Catholic Diocese of Warri, Delta State, has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from priestly duties following allegations that he secretly married Ms. Dora Chichah in the United States.
The suspension was announced in a statement titled “Decree of Suspension” dated January 16, 2025.
The statement, signed by Bishop of Warri Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido and the Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, cited Canon Law as the basis for the decision.

According to the Diocese, Fr. Oghenerukevwe married Ms. Chichah on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, Texas.
The marriage came to light after footage, reportedly shared online by the bride’s sister, went viral.
The Diocese stated that by entering into marriage, Fr. Oghenerukevwe automatically incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension, as prescribed by Canon 1394 §1.

Bishop Ewherido formally decreed his suspension, prohibiting him from exercising priestly functions or representing himself as a priest of the Diocese of Warri.
The statement also revealed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had requested on November 30, 2024, to be released from his priestly obligations.
The Diocese responded, requesting necessary documentation to initiate the process.
However, Fr. Oghenerukevwe allegedly went ahead with the marriage before completing the canonical procedures.
The Diocese emphasized that the suspension is immediate and urged the priest to reflect on his actions.
“May God grant him the grace to reflect on this situation and guide him on the path of reconciliation,” the statement concluded.

The Diocese further noted that Fr. Oghenerukevwe retains the right to petition for the revocation or amendment of the decree, provided he demonstrates a willingness to reform and comply with canonical requirements.
This suspension underscores the Catholic Church’s strict adherence to priestly celibacy and the procedures required for laicization. The Diocese reiterated its commitment to upholding the sanctity of Holy Orders.
