Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has declared that he will not permit U.S. deportation flights carrying Colombian migrants to enter the country’s airspace, citing concerns over their treatment.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Petro stated that “The United States cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals,” adding that the flights would only be allowed once Washington establishes a protocol ensuring the “dignified treatment” of migrants.

Petro’s bold move signals a growing tension over migrant deportations and comes on the heels of similar actions taken by Brazil, where the government voiced strong disapproval over the treatment of deported Brazilians from the U.S. This included reports of Brazilians being handcuffed during deportation flights, which Brazil called a “flagrant disregard” for basic human rights.
In his statement, Petro emphasized that while he would not accept flights that mistreated migrants, he would allow U.S. civilian flights to carry deported individuals, provided they were not treated “like criminals.”

He further claimed to have “turned back U.S. military planes that were coming with Colombian migrants,” although details about these actions were not immediately confirmed by the U.S. government.
The remarks are a significant stand by Petro, a left-wing leader known for his critical stance on U.S. policies, particularly when it comes to issues affecting Latin American migrants.
The U.S. has not yet commented on Petro’s recent actions or the claim that deportation flights have been blocked.

This move comes as tensions rise between the U.S. and several Latin American countries over the handling of migrant deportations.
Petro’s actions reflect broader concerns about the treatment of migrants in the U.S. and a growing movement in Latin America to push back against such practices.
