EKO HOT BLOG reports that as of February 13, 2025, the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has experienced notable fluctuations in Nigeria. Over the past year, prices surged significantly, with reports in October 2024 indicating an increase to approximately ₦1,500 per kilogram—up from ₦700 per kilogram in June 2023. This marked a staggering 114% rise in just 16 months, putting financial pressure on households and businesses relying on LPG.
However, recent data suggests a marginal decline in prices. As of February 12, 2025, depot rates for a 20 metric ton (MT) load stood as follows:
- NIPCO – ₦19,400,000
- NAVGAS – ₦19,500,000
- MATRIX – ₦22,500,000
These depot figures translate to an average retail price of approximately ₦1,200 to ₦1,300 per kilogram, depending on the supplier. However, retail prices may vary based on factors such as transportation costs, location, and individual retailer margins.
Factors Driving Price Fluctuations
The volatility in cooking gas prices is attributed to several key factors:
- Global Energy Market Trends: International price movements directly impact the cost of LPG in Nigeria, as over 60% of the country’s supply is imported.
- Exchange Rate Volatility: The depreciation of the naira against the dollar continues to influence the landing cost of LPG.
- Domestic Supply Constraints: Limited local production and distribution challenges contribute to market instability.
Retail Price Breakdown by Cylinder Size
For consumers, the current retail prices based on cylinder sizes are as follows:
Estimated Prices:
- 1kg Cylinder: ₦1,300
- 2kg Cylinder: ₦2,600
- 3kg Cylinder – ₦3,900
- 5kg Cylinder – ₦6,500
- 6kg Cylinder – ₦7,800
- 10kg Cylinder – ₦13,000
- 12.5kg Cylinder – ₦16,250
With ongoing market fluctuations, consumers and stakeholders remain cautious about further price shifts in the coming months.

Cooking Gas Prices
Experts urge the government to implement policies that enhance local LPG production and stabilize the market to reduce dependence on imports.
