Olugbile launched the book, Pelewura, on November 15, 2023.

The book has received positive reviews from various quarters.

It centers on the life and times of Alimotu Pelewura, the founder of the Lagos Market Women’s Association.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Pelewura, a historical account of Alimotu Pewura, written by Consultant Psychiatrist and Newspaper Columnist, Dr. Femi Olugbile, is set for a Book Reading and Book Signing event.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA), as part of its Book Trek series, is organising the event.
The Book Reading and Book Signing for Pelewura will hold on Friday, December 29, 2023, at RovingHeights Bookstore, Retail Boulevard, Landmark Events Centre, Plot 263 Water Corporation Drive, Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The event will take place from 4-6 pm and will feature a live interview with the author, to be conducted by Mr Kunle Ajibade, a writer and critic.
CORA disclosed that Dr. Olugbile will be available to answer questions from the public, and to autograph copies of the book.
Speaking on the essence of Pelewura, the art committee described the book as a work of ‘faction’ (a mix of fact and fiction) that celebrates the life of notable figures in the history of Lagos State.
“It [Pelewura] is a work of ‘faction’ that celebrates one of the greatest heroines in the history of Lagos. It captures the essence of Lagos life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, bringing to life such notable figures as Herbert Macaulay and Esugbayi Eleko, as well as Henry Carr and Bernard Bourdillon,” CORA said.
“It describes famous battles such as the resistance against the Pullen Regulations of the colonial government which sought to control the price and supply of garri and other local staple foods, and the fight against the taxation of women.
“It captures the battle to wrest control of land from the hands of government back to the traditional landowners, a battle that went all the way to the Privy Council in London.
“There is also the story of the deposition of the Eleko by the colonial government, and the struggle to ensure his re-instatement. In all of these, Pelewura and her market women played a leading role, alongside the indefatigable Herbert Macaulay.”
The committee added that the general public is invited to the Book Reading and Book Signing.
In an interview with Eko Hot Blog in November, Dr. Olugbile said he believes that Pelewura will deeply impact its readers, offering a fresh perspective on lesser-known aspects of Lagos’ history, unraveling the incredible strides of remarkable figures from the past.
“The book will let people know about the history of Lagos some of the achievements of people who have come before that many people might not be aware of,” he said.
The author of six books, including ‘Lonely Men’, ‘Leader’, ‘Ten Ahead’, ‘Batolica’, ‘Heroes’, and many more, said he was excited about the impact Pelewura would have on its readers.
