As today marks the final day of the year, many Nigerians are looking forward to turning the page and welcoming 2026, hopeful that the New Year will bring renewed opportunities and stability.
However, before Nigerians usher in the New Year, several countries around the world, due to differences in time zones will welcome 2026 earlier.
Below is a list of some countries that will enter the New Year ahead of Nigeria:
- New Zealand
Located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, New Zealand consists of the North and South Islands. With Wellington 12 hours ahead of Nigeria, the country will already be in 2026 by the time it is noon in Nigeria. - Fiji
The island nation of Fiji, with its capital in Suva, is also in the South Pacific. Fiji will welcome 2026 by 1 p.m. Nigerian time. - Japan
Japan, an East Asian island nation, is eight hours ahead of Nigeria. By 4 p.m. Nigerian time, the country will have entered the New Year. - South Korea
South Korea, located on the Korean Peninsula in East Asia, will also begin the New Year by 4 p.m. Nigerian time.

- North Korea
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, which borders China, Russia and South Korea, will welcome 2026 at 4 p.m. Nigerian time. - China
The world’s most populous country is seven hours ahead of Nigeria and will enter 2026 by 5 p.m. Nigerian time. - Singapore
The Southeast Asian city-state of Singapore will welcome the New Year by 5 p.m. Nigerian time. - Indonesia
Indonesia, located between the Indian and Pacific oceans, is six hours ahead of Nigeria and will usher in 2026 by 6 p.m. Nigerian time. - Russia
Russia spans Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. Moscow, which is two hours ahead of Nigeria, will welcome the New Year by 10 p.m. Nigerian time.
