Van Der Beek was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the latter part of 2023 but chose to make the information public nearly a year later, in November 2024.

In interviews after revealing his condition, he spoke candidly about noticing unusual changes in his bowel habits before undergoing medical tests.
Doctors later confirmed he had stage three cancer, meaning the illness had spread to nearby lymph nodes.
Colorectal cancer begins in the lining of the colon and can extend to other parts of the body if not treated promptly. Increased screening in recent years has improved early detection rates, though cases among younger adults have been rising.
Reflecting on his treatment, Van Der Beek once described feeling as though key aspects of his identity, as a father, husband and provider, had been put on hold. Despite the emotional toll, he said the experience taught him that his worth extended beyond his roles and career.

He also used his platform to encourage others to prioritise screening and early diagnosis.
The father of six rose to prominence in the late 1990s as Dawson Leery in Dawson’s Creek, which aired from 1998 to 2003 and became a defining show for a generation.
He also starred in the 1999 film Varsity Blues and later appeared in projects such as Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and Dancing with the Stars.
Even after his diagnosis, he continued acting, including a guest appearance in a recent Prime Video college comedy series.

He made a virtual appearance at a Dawson’s Creek reunion charity event in September, where cast members reunited to support cancer-related causes.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans across the entertainment industry. Former co-stars and fellow actors described him as kind, sincere and deeply dedicated to his craft and family.
Industry organisations also honoured his contribution to television, noting that his portrayal of Dawson Leery left a lasting cultural impact.
Van Der Beek is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children.
