Eko Hot Blog reports that the ceremony, held at the Convocation Hall, attracted principal officers of the University, deans, heads of departments, academic and non-teaching staff, parents, guardians, and well-wishers, as the institution officially welcomed the new students into its academic community.
In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Professor Anthony Alaba Akinwale, OP, congratulated the fresh students and their parents, describing the matriculation as a significant milestone in the students’ academic journey.
He urged the new entrants to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to excellence in both learning and conduct, in line with the University’s motto, Pro Scientia et Moribus (For Knowledge and Character).
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that education at Augustine University extends beyond intellectual attainment to include moral and ethical formation.
He charged the students to embrace critical thinking, respect the academic calendar, maintain zero tolerance for antisocial behaviour, and channel their youthful energy towards positive and productive pursuits.
He further encouraged them to see themselves as future leaders capable of contributing meaningfully to national development.
Delivering the matriculation lecture, Professor Roseangela Ifeyinwa Nwuba, Professor of Molecular and Cellular Parasitology and Sabbatical Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences, challenged the popular notion that “school is a scam.”
She explained that tertiary education is a transformative process that builds intellect, character, and responsible citizenship beyond the mere acquisition of certificates.
Professor Nwuba noted that while access to information has become easier in the digital age, true education lies in critical thinking, ethical judgment, discipline, and perseverance.
Drawing illustrations from her scientific background, she described education as a gradual developmental process that refines potential into competence, integrity, and leadership capacity.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of outstanding students.
Letters of Commendation were presented to returning students who attained a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of between 4.0 and 5.0, in recognition of their exceptional academic performance.
The University also honoured the Best Behaved Male and Female Students for their exemplary conduct and adherence to institutional values.
The 11th matriculation ceremony reaffirmed Augustine University’s commitment to academic excellence, character development, and the holistic formation of students prepared to make positive impact in society.
