Multiple sources had reported five deaths due to the outbreak, but the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, clarified on Friday that two recent deaths in the area were unrelated to cholera.
“The death of two people in Ikpide-Irri was not related to the cholera that happened in that community. In most cases where we collected samples, the test results are still pending, so they are not confirmed cases,” Onojaeme explained.
He assured residents that the situation was under control, citing swift intervention by the State Epidemiology Unit.
“Once we received reports of the outbreak, we immediately mobilized resources, including drugs and portable water, to the community,” Onojaeme stated.
The team, accompanied by Isoko South Local Government Chairman, conducted awareness campaigns on personal hygiene and water purification.
Tablets for purifying drinking water were distributed, and those who had fallen ill were treated on the spot.
In addition, health education sessions were provided to residents to prevent the further spread of the disease.
“I can tell you categorically that the outbreak is fully under control,” Onojaeme affirmed.
Cholera, a waterborne disease, is often linked to poor sanitation and contaminated water sources. The government’s swift response included addressing these root causes by advocating for better hygiene practices and ensuring access to clean water.
