Despite Tinubu winning in more local government areas, Obi secured the majority of votes cast. The results for all 20 local governments have been declared, with Tinubu winning in 11 and Peter Obi in nine.
Reacting to the news, popular activist and skit maker, Debo Adebayo, also known as Mr. Macaroni, celebrated the victory of Peter Obi and called it evidence that power remains with the people. He also mocked those who had dismissed the Labour Party as an internet and structureless party.
Taking to Twitter on Monday, Mr. Macaroni wrote:
“Despite all the violence and intimidation unleashed in Lagos, Peter Obi has won Lagos State!!! The margin should be way more!!! I just want the people to know that the power is in our hands!!! They said no structure!! They said it is internet noise!!! LESSONS!!!!!”
The election in Lagos State was marked by allegations of violence and voter intimidation, with reports of armed gangs disrupting the voting process in some areas.
However, despite these challenges, the people of Lagos State turned out in large numbers to exercise their democratic rights and make their voices heard.
The victory of Peter Obi in Lagos State is seen as a significant upset, as the state is traditionally viewed as an APC stronghold.
