Few days before taking office, U.S. President Donald Trump had a heated 45-minute phone call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
The call focused on Trump’s push to make Greenland part of the U.S. and was described by officials as “explosive.”

Trump argued that Greenland was vital for America’s security and even threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark, a NATO ally, to pressure them.
Frederiksen firmly refused, pointing out that Greenland’s Parliament had already stated the island was “not for sale.” She suggested strengthening trade ties instead, but Trump rejected the idea.
Greenland, which belongs to Denmark, is strategically important due to its location and resources like rare earth minerals. The U.S. already has a military base there. However, Denmark has governed Greenland since the 1700s, and it became an autonomous territory in 1979.
Frederiksen’s strong stance reportedly angered Trump, and European officials were alarmed by his aggressive tone.
Trump compared his ambitions for Greenland to the U.S. purchase of Alaska in 1867 and valued the island at about $230.25 million, though experts believe its worth is much higher today.

Despite Denmark’s objections, Trump later declared that he remained determined to acquire Greenland, saying, “I’m sure Denmark will come around.” His focus on Greenland highlights growing global interest in the Arctic, with countries like China and Russia also competing for influence in the region.
