Nigeria’s Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa recently presented a bold vision for transforming education sector, focusing on innovative reforms, data-driven solutions, and preparing students for future challenges.
The Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) of the Ministry of Education, unveiled last year, with the overarching goal of moving Nigeria from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-based economy, has the following objectives:
• Reduction in out-of-school children,
• Reduction in learning poverty, and
• Increase in skills and human capital for the labour market
NESRI’s Pillars are Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET); Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Medical Sciences (STEMM); Out of School Children; Girl-Child Education; Data & Digitization; and Education Quality Assurance.

2. The Federal Government has so far disbursed N35 Billion to 261,000 students under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) program. (So far, the Scheme has received about 420,000 applications, and disbursements are being scaled up).
3. Amendment of UBEC Act has commenced, to improve access by States to basic education funding
4. The Ministry has launched the LUMINAH Girl Child Initiative, aimed at ensuring that every girl child in Nigeria, especially in hard-to-reach communities, has access to basic education and vocational training. In addition, the implementation of the World Bank-supported Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) program has been expanded to cover 11 additional States, making a total of 18 participating States.
5. Also recently launched: the NEDI – Nigeria Education Data Initiative, to harmonize 202,567 schools into a single digital Repository.
6. The Federal Government, in an effort to expand its Technical, Vocational and Enterpreneurship Training (TVET) agenda, is set to introduce incentives to attract young Nigerians — such as payment of monthly stipends, provision of decent accommodation, and payment of take-off grants. In line with this, President Bola Tinubu has approved the release of N120 billion to advance the TVET agenda of the Ministry of Education. Over the next two years, the Federal Government aims to empower at least 650,000 youth with technical, vocational and digital skills required to meet emerging industrial and labour needs.
7. TETFUND is directing its 2025 high-impact intervention spendings to 18 identified Medical Schools across the 6 geo-political zones, to deliver improved infrastructure and learning conditions, with the goal of quadrupling the admission quota into Nigerian medical schools.
8. The Federal Government is committed to constructing 7,200 new schools, renovating 195,000 classrooms, procuring 1.68 million school furniture, training 970,000 teachers, supplying 2,000,000 teaching aids, and distributing 103 million textbooks – as part of efforts to increase national enrolment into basic education to 80 percent by 2027.
9. President Bola Tinubu has approved N40 billion for the completion of the abandoned National Library project, as well as supporting its academic and research needs

10. The Ministry is set to secure a $552 million credit facility from the World Bank for its Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equality (HOPE) Education initiative to strengthen the national education system. When approved, the funding will be disbursed to State Governments on a pay-for-performance basis.
