EKO HOT BLOG reports that Akpoti-Uduaghan petitioned the IPU over her six-month suspension and allegations of harassment, seeking intervention from the global democratic institution.
Speaking at the Women in Parliament session at the United Nations in New York, Akpoti-Uduaghan delivered an emotional address, detailing what she described as victimization by Akpabio. She insisted that her suspension from Nigeria’s Senate was unlawful and an injustice that required international attention.
Reacting to the complaint, IPU President Tulia Ackson acknowledged the concerns raised but emphasized that the institution would also hear Akpabio’s side before taking further action.
“There was a matter raised this morning by our colleague from Nigeria, Senator Natasha. We have listened to her concerns, and while this has provided us insight into the issue, it is only fair that we also hear from the other party,” Ackson stated.
“As an institution, the IPU follows due process, and we will ensure that both sides are heard before making any decisions. After listening to all parties involved, we will take the necessary steps.”
Ackson also noted that another Nigerian delegate had requested to speak on the matter but was not given the opportunity due to time constraints. However, she reassured that the IPU would fully address the issue as per its standard procedures.

The controversy surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension has sparked debates within Nigeria and beyond, with calls for greater transparency and fairness in parliamentary proceedings. The IPU’s intervention is expected to shape the next steps in resolving the dispute.
