The Eko Club of Pennsylvania, USA, has significantly contributed to enhancing educational infrastructure in Lagos Island, with a special focus on digital literacy.
Today, the club officially commissioned newly renovated computer centres at Holy Cross Catholic School and St. Joseph School, marking a major milestone in their ongoing project to bridge technology gaps in Nigerian schools.
The event was graced by the presence of club members, local officials, school representatives, and community stakeholders. The Club’s P.R.O., Hon. Oluwatoyin Caxton, speaking on behalf of the president at the ceremony, Prince (Aare) Adewale Alade Dosunmu, President of the Eko Club of Pennsylvania; expressed their commitment to supporting education through technological advancement.
“Three years ago, our club embarked on a mission to improve educational infrastructure, with a clear focus on integrating technology into schools,” he stated.
“We recognize that information technology has interconnected the world, making it essential for young students to acquire relevant skills that will enable them to compete globally.”
In addition, he emphasised the challenges faced by government agencies in providing adequate facilities and conducive learning environments.
“We are also encouraged by the government’s willingness to address educational needs and improve the welfare of teachers and staff,” he said, adding that the club aims to partner actively with government efforts to elevate education standards.
In 2023, the club formed a committee to assess the computer learning centers within the Lagos Island School District.
Led by Mr Olusegun Bankole, the team visited three centers—Saint Paul, Holy Cross, and Saint Joseph Primary Schools—to evaluate their infrastructure and needs.
Furthermore, the committee observed that Saint Paul Primary School at Aroloya was the largest among the three, prompting the club to prioritize renovation there.
Subsequently, in July 2023, work began on renovating the infrastructure and replacing outdated computers.
With the support of community stakeholders, the project culminated in the delivery of a fully refurbished computer center equipped with 30 brand-new computers and monitors.
The club also pledged to complete renovation works at the remaining two centres.
Today’s event marks the fulfillment of that promise, with the unveiling of the renovated centers designed to foster computer literacy among students.
President Dosunmu highlighted the importance of technology in today’s rapidly progressing scientific landscape.
“In this digital age, it is vital that investments in technology are made to equip our students with essential skills for examinations, research, and broader educational purposes,” he remarked.
He credited the success of the project to the dedication of Eko Club of Pennsylvania members, thanking them for their steadfastness, selflessness, and altruism throughout the project stages.
“This initiative demonstrates the power of partnership and collaboration. It is also a testament to the impactful leadership of Eko Club International, which encourages all chapters to have signature projects that add value to our communities both in Nigeria and abroad,” he noted.

President Dosumu affirmed that this current project is just the beginning of more impactful initiatives, reinforcing the club’s commitment to community development.
Mrs. Obiozor, the head of the unit of Holy Cross Computer Centre, Lagos Island, expressed her gratitude to Eko Club of Pennsylvania.
“I am overwhelmed, and I pray that God will keep protecting the donors (Eko Club Pennsylvania), and they will never lack… It’s a good development, and this will help us a lot.” She said.
“It’s so good, because students learn better through practicals. When they go for practicals, instead of standing and giraffing, they’ll all have a computer to work with…” She concluded.
