The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed the restoration of power to several parts of the country following a blackout caused by a transmission line fault on Wednesday.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, TCN explained that the outage was triggered when the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330-kilovolt (kV) transmission line tripped at the Omotosho end around 11:34 a.m. At the time of the incident, the Benin–Egbin 330kV line was also undergoing a scheduled outage for mechanical line tracing.
The tripping resulted in a cascading effect that disrupted electricity supply to key locations, including Lagos, Abuja, and Osogbo. However, TCN reassured the public that the rest of the national grid remained stable and was not affected by the incident.
Following prompt interventions by its engineers, the transmission company successfully restored the faulty line, bringing back normal power supply to the affected areas.
“The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) wishes to clarify that at 11:34 hours today, the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line tripped at the Omotosho end. At the time, the Benin–Egbin 330kV line was on a scheduled outage for mechanical line tracing. The tripping resulted in a cascaded outage affecting the Lagos, Abuja, and Osogbo axes.
However, all other parts of the grid remained unaffected. The line has been successfully restored, and normal power supply has been fully restored to the affected areas,” the statement read.
The company further assured Nigerians of its commitment to improving grid stability and ensuring the efficient transmission of bulk power across the country.
Despite TCN’s confirmation of restoration, reports indicate that some parts of Abuja have yet to receive electricity supply from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) as of the time of this report. Residents in affected areas are hopeful that full power supply will be restored soon.
The incident once again highlights the recurring challenges of Nigeria’s power infrastructure, with frequent grid disturbances affecting electricity supply to millions of people. Authorities continue to explore measures to strengthen the grid and minimize disruptionsin the future.
