Southampton’s Premier League survival hopes were dashed on Sunday after a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham, marking the earliest relegation in the league’s history.

The result condemned Southampton to the Championship with seven matches still to play. Brennan Johnson scored twice in the first half, and although Mateus Fernandes found the net late on, it wasn’t enough to prevent the Saints from finishing bottom of the table.

Southampton’s relegation came after a poor season, with their defeat confirming they were 22 points adrift of safety. The club’s slide began after a 5-0 loss to Tottenham in December, which left them at the bottom of the table with only five points from 16 games.

Russell Martin, the manager who led them to promotion, was dismissed, and former Roma boss Ivan Juric took over but couldn’t avert the downfall.

The club now faces the reality of returning to the second tier, 315 days after securing promotion through the Championship play-off final against Leeds.
