Ex-NLC Chairman Kaduna Eboigbodin Dies After Clash with Police in Benin City
EKO HOT BLOG reports that Civil society organizations have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the police, demanding that those responsible be identified and held accountable, amid mounting public outrage over the incident.
Rev. David Ugolor, Executive Director of the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), recounted that Eboigbodin was stopped on Monday while driving with his wife. The officers requested his vehicle documents, which were reportedly in order, but raised concerns over discrepancies between the car’s glass engraving and license plate.
Despite Eboigbodin’s explanations, the officers allegedly confiscated his documents and called for a tow truck. Tensions escalated, and Eboigbodin reportedly collapsed at the scene. Witnesses said he was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Eyewitnesses also claimed that the officers fled instead of offering assistance.
The Edo State Police Command has denied any wrongdoing. SP Moses Yamu, the Command’s spokesperson, stated that the account from civil rights groups differs from the version provided by Eboigbodin’s wife.

Civil society groups, including ANEEJ and the Edo Civil Society Organizations (EDOSCO), have demanded transparency and accountability.
Rev. Ugolor described Eboigbodin as a dedicated leader and a strong advocate for workers’ rights, highlighting his roles as former NLC Chairman in Edo, National Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), and a pioneer in civil activism.
Comrade Omobude Agho, Coordinator-General of EDOSCO, expressed deep shock: “This is a significant loss for the labor movement and Edo State. Eboigbodin was a respected figure who tirelessly championed justice and workers’ rights.”
The groups insist that the police provide a thorough explanation and reveal the identities of the officers involved. They also emphasized the urgent need for reform within the Nigerian Police Force to prevent similar incidents and ensure accountability.
Eboigbodin’s death has sparked widespread outrage, with labor unions, civil society organizations, and residents uniting in calls for justice.
