The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Nwali Nwibo for allegedly spreading false information claiming that bandits and suspected Fulani herdsmen had invaded Nguzu Edda Community in Edda Local Government Area of the state.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Command said the arrest followed an intelligence-driven investigation which revealed that the report was false and capable of causing panic among residents.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, and made available to journalists in Abakaliki.
According to the statement, security agencies launched an investigation after the report gained traction and sparked concern within the affected community and beyond.
“The arrest followed a painstaking intelligence-led investigation conducted by the Command, which established the falsity of the report and led to the apprehension of the suspect,” the statement read.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, urged residents to verify information before sharing it on social media or other communication platforms.
She warned that the spread of false information could create unnecessary fear, undermine public confidence and threaten peace and security within communities.
The police commissioner also cautioned residents against circulating unverified reports capable of generating panic, stressing the need for responsible use of social media.

Okafor reiterated the Command’s commitment to tracking down and prosecuting individuals involved in the creation and dissemination of fake news in line with the law.
She further assured residents that the Police Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property across the state and encouraged members of the public to rely on verified information from official sources.
The Command also called on citizens to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities while avoiding the spread of unconfirmed information that could disrupt public order.
