Nollywood enthusiasts have voiced their frustration over repetitive casting and low-quality movies produced for YouTube, sparking a heated debate across social media platforms.

Social media personality Lizzy Adebayo ignited the conversation on Instagram, criticizing the monotony in recent Nollywood productions.

She accused filmmakers of recycling actors and neglecting production standards, calling YouTube Nollywood movies a “waste” of resources.

Adebayo highlighted actors like Ruth Kadiri, Destiny Etiko, and Timini Egbuson, frequently cast in similar roles, as examples of the industry’s lack of creativity.

“Watching Nollywood movies on YouTube is wasting my Wi-Fi and data money,” she said, lamenting the decline in storytelling quality compared to earlier Nollywood films.

The criticisms gained traction on X (formerly Twitter), with users echoing similar sentiments. Muyiwa Okpa (@MuyiwaOkpa22) wrote, “Same storyline, same actors, same setting… all rubbish! They don’t want to spend money but want to make money.”

Another user, Gaza (@Gaza), slammed low-budget productions, saying, “Two-hour movie and they’ll finish it in one apartment with only four people. What a shame!”

However, not all fans agreed. Ony Factory (@OnyFactory) defended the producers, arguing that YouTube’s free platform limits production budgets.

“YouTube is free. Do you expect producers to spend millions and give it to you for free?” he asked, urging critics to subscribe to platforms like Netflix for higher-quality films.
