EKO HOT BLOG reports that the visit, which took place on Monday, also included a trip to the Ekiti prison where Obi met privately with Farotimi.
The visit to Afe Babalola’s office at Afe Babalola University in Ado-Ekiti involved extensive discussions, including Farotimi’s ongoing detention.
Activist Moses Paul, who shared details and photos of the visit on social media, confirmed that Obi sought Babalola’s support, reportedly begging him on behalf of Farotimi.
Farotimi, a known human rights lawyer, was remanded in custody after being accused of defamation.
The charges stem from statements made in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, in which he allegedly tarnished the reputation of Afe Babalola. Farotimi was arraigned on December 4 and denied all charges against him.
His legal team, led by Dayo Akeredolu, argued for his release on bail, citing his prominent status and lack of threat to public safety.
Obi’s efforts to secure Farotimi’s release come amidst growing concerns over the legal battle, which has sparked debates over freedom of expression and the treatment of activists in Nigeria.
Farotimi’s supporters continue to rally for his release, with protests expected in the coming days.
The ongoing case remains a sensitive issue, with Farotimi’s supporters accusing Babalola of using his position to silence critics. Meanwhile, Obi’s visit has intensified calls for justice and reform in the Nigerian legal system.
