An unidentified illness has reportedly claimed the lives of five students at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA).
EKO HOT BLOG gathered that according to students who spoke anonymously, four deaths occurred last week under unclear circumstances, while another student, who fell ill overnight, passed away today.
Sources noted that officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) had recently visited the university for a meningitis awareness campaign. However, it remains uncertain if the disease was responsible for the earlier fatalities.
Confirming the deaths, KSUSTA’s registrar, Maimaru Alhaji Tilli, stated that the cause remains unknown.
“Yes, four students have died according to our records, but we do not yet know the cause. However, we recognize the urgent need to decongest student accommodations,” Tilli said.
He further revealed that the university had formally written to the Ministry of Higher Education, particularly Commissioner Alhaji Isah Abubakar Tunga, seeking guidance on preventive measures.
“We have requested permission to close the university, but we have not yet received a response,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) has also written to the university administration, calling for the institution’s closure due to the growing concerns over the mysterious illness.
As of now, no official diagnosis has been made, leaving the university community on edge.
