EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Grammy award-winning singer explained that while Fela’s presence was significant in his early years, he does not consider the late legend a personal source of artistic inspiration.
Burna Boy, during a recent conversation, revealed that his first true musical attachments were to artists such as Tupac Shakur and Lil Wayne. He mentioned albums like Makaveli and Tha Carter III as works that shaped his passion for music and influenced his creative direction more than Fela’s body of work.
“Fela had a big influence because his music was always around me, but I can’t say he inspired me. Inspiration is different. For me, Tupac and Lil Wayne were the ones who made me want to be an artist,” Burna Boy was quoted as saying.

He also dismissed comparisons between himself and Fela, stressing that the Afrobeat icon was in a class of his own. “Fela was Fela. Nobody in their right mind should compare me to him,” he added.
The clarification comes after years of debate among fans and critics about whether Burna Boy, who is often called “the African Giant,” is a direct successor to Fela’s musical and social legacy. While many have pointed out similarities in their messages and performance style, Burna Boy insists that he is carving his own lane rather than walking in Fela’s shadow.
This statement has stirred mixed reactions across social media. Some argue that Burna Boy is distancing himself too much from the Afrobeat legacy, while others believe his honesty shows his determination to define his music on his own terms.
With his bold comments, Burna Boy has once again shown his ability to ignite conversations beyond music, ensuring that his name remains central to the evolving story of Afrobeats globally.
