The Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu has declared Thursday, March 19 and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful on the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan and urged them to uphold the values of love, generosity, peace, tolerance and sacrifice practised during the fasting period.
He also called on Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for the nation’s peace, unity and continued development.
The minister encouraged citizens to celebrate responsibly and extend kindness to the less privileged, while assuring that the government remains committed to promoting unity and peaceful coexistence across the country.
Meanwhile, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, announced the commencement of the search for the Shawwal crescent, which signals the end of Ramadan 1447AH and the beginning of Eid celebrations.
The announcement was contained in a statement by the Sultanate Council, Sokoto, signed by the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sambo Wali Junaidu.
According to the statement, Wednesday, March 18, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Ramadan 1447AH, has been designated for the nationwide moon sighting.

Muslims across the country were urged to observe the sky for the new crescent and promptly report any credible sighting to the appropriate authorities.
