The Federal Government has expressed confidence that Nigeria is on a positive path under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, despite ongoing economic and security challenges facing the country.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Eko Hot Blog reports that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said the administration remains committed to implementing reforms aimed at improving the nation’s economy and overall development.

Akume acknowledged that many Nigerians are experiencing hardship as a result of ongoing policy adjustments but maintained that the reforms are beginning to produce encouraging results.
He noted that while government does not claim to have solved all the country’s problems, efforts are being made to address inflation, insecurity and other pressing concerns.

According to him, available economic data indicates that the country is gradually recording progress. He cited growth figures showing that Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product expanded by 4.07 per cent in the last quarter of 2025 and 3.89 per cent in the first quarter of 2026.
The SGF also highlighted several social intervention programmes introduced by the administration to reduce the impact of economic reforms on citizens.
These include student loan initiatives, conditional cash transfers and consumer credit schemes designed to support vulnerable households and improve access to funding.
He disclosed that more than one million students have benefited from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, with over ₦184 billion released to cover tuition fees and upkeep allowances.
He added that millions of households have also received support through the Renewed Hope Conditional Cash Transfer Programme.
Defending the administration’s fiscal policies, Akume said reforms introduced in the tax sector were intended to strengthen revenue generation, improve transparency and enhance accountability in public finance management.
On the anti-corruption front, he said government agencies have continued to recover proceeds of crime and prosecute offenders.
He added that part of the recovered funds had been channelled into financing the student loan programme.

Akume further noted that Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force grey list in October 2025 reflected improvements in anti-money laundering measures and efforts to curb terrorism financing.
Addressing security concerns, the SGF admitted that insecurity remains a major challenge but assured Nigerians that the government is intensifying efforts to strengthen the armed forces and other security agencies through increased funding, recruitment and operational support.
He also stressed the importance of national unity, saying sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of trust and cooperation among citizens.
According to him, the administration continues to support initiatives that promote religious harmony, tolerance and national cohesion, including the National Values Charter and programmes driven by the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Akume said the Tinubu administration would seek another mandate based on its performance and achievements. He stated that the government remains focused on completing ongoing reforms and expanding programmes that are yielding positive results.
The SGF added that Nigerians would ultimately assess the administration’s performance at the polls, insisting that the government is prepared to be judged on measurable outcomes and evidence of progress.
