In a bid to avert a nationwide protest scheduled for tomorrow, February 4, the Federal Government has called an urgent meeting with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) today.
The meeting, which is set to begin at 5 p.m., aims to address concerns raised by the NLC regarding the recent 50 per cent hike in telecommunications tariffs.

According to sources within the government, the meeting is expected to focus on matters of national importance, particularly the controversial tariff increase. The gathering, hosted by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), will also cover the NLC’s opposition to the N8 billion government allocation in the 2025 budget for electricity bill sensitization.
The NLC has sharply criticized this allocation, calling it a wasteful and corrupt expenditure.
A source from the SGF’s office confirmed that the meeting will be inter-ministerial, involving multiple government agencies, and aimed at resolving the impasse between the government and the NLC.
This comes in response to growing opposition from workers and civil society groups, who argue that the hike will place additional financial burdens on Nigerians already grappling with economic hardship.

Despite the government’s call for dialogue, NLC leaders have made it clear that they will not accept the 50 per cent telecom tariff increase.
NLC officials have been vocal in their opposition, with some sources within the labor group stating that they are committed to proceeding with the protest, regardless of the outcome of today’s meeting.
Earlier this week, the NLC instructed its affiliates and state councils to begin full mobilization for the protest, which will take place in various state capitals and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The protest will target telecommunication service providers and government offices, with NLC affiliates expected to present petitions at National Communications Commission (NCC) offices or state Houses of Assembly.

In a letter to state councils and affiliate unions, NLC General Secretary Emma Ugboaja emphasized the urgency of the situation, urging all Nigerians to join the protest in a show of resistance against policies that harm workers and the general public.
The letter described the tariff hike as another example of government actions benefiting corporate elites at the expense of ordinary citizens.
As tensions rise, all eyes are on the outcome of today’s meeting, with the Federal Government hoping to find common ground and prevent a mass demonstration that could further escalate public discontent.
