The National Identity Management Commission has cautioned Nigerians against a fake online scheme claiming to offer free corrections of National Identification Number (NIN) records.
In a public notice released on Tuesday, Eko Hot Blog gathered the commission said a message circulating on social media, along with links directing users to an alleged correction portal, is fraudulent and aimed at stealing personal information from unsuspecting individuals.

NIMC described the platform as a phishing operation and urged the public to avoid engaging with any unauthorised websites or links promoting identity-related services.
The commission reassured Nigerians that the National Identity Database remains secure and has not been compromised by cybercriminals.

According to the agency, all updates, modifications and corrections to NIN records should only be carried out through approved channels, including its official self-service platform and accredited enrolment centres across the country.
NIMC advised citizens to verify information through its official communication platforms and remain alert to suspicious messages requesting personal details or directing them to unofficial websites.

The agency also encouraged members of the public to report any fraudulent identity-related messages, warning that cybercriminals are increasingly exploiting social media and fake websites to obtain sensitive personal information.
The advisory comes amid growing concerns over online scams targeting identity data and other personal records.
