The Federal Government has successfully renegotiated the cost of rehabilitating the Iddo Bridge in Lagos, reducing the project estimate from N27 billion to N17 billion.

“Julius Berger initially proposed about N27 billion for the rehabilitation,” Umahi said. “Following extensive negotiations, the cost was brought down to N17 billion.”
Umahi praised Julius Berger Nigeria Plc. for its cooperative stance under new management, describing the company as operating with renewed transparency and professionalism.
He stressed the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, stating that all contractors must strictly adhere to the standards and directives set by the Ministry of Works.
The minister revealed that the scope of the rehabilitation had expanded beyond the initial plan to repair fire-damaged sections. The project now includes a more comprehensive restoration of the bridge’s structure.
Expressing concern over the bridge’s deteriorated condition, Umahi attributed the damage to years of neglect, misuse, and illegal activities beneath the bridge.
He explained that three spans were severely affected by a fire believed to have started in makeshift settlements, where illegal occupants stored chemicals and lit fires that compromised the structure.
Currently, the bridge clearance stands at about 4.5 metres. Umahi announced plans to raise it to at least 5.6 metres to prevent future damage from heavy vehicles and unauthorised constructions.
The Minister reiterating the government’s determination to protect public infrastructure declared that no individuals would be allowed to reside under the Iddo Bridge going forward.
“As long as I am the Minister of Works, no one will be allowed to live beneath the Iddo Bridge,” Umahi asserted. “The safety and wellbeing of Nigerians remain a top priority.”
He also revealed that the ministry is committed to restoring the structural integrity of the Iddo Bridge and ensuring that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
