EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to a report by Nairametrics, the NDPC announced the sanction in a statement issued on Sunday by its Head of Legal, Enforcement and Regulations, Babatunde Bamigboye. The commission confirmed that the penalty followed an extensive investigation that began in the second quarter of 2024.
The probe was initiated after the commission received reports of alleged privacy violations involving the personal data of MultiChoice subscribers. The NDPC said its findings revealed that MultiChoice unlawfully transferred the personal data of Nigerian subscribers across borders without complying with required legal protocols.
The commission emphasized that this action was a direct breach of Nigeria’s data protection regulations and a violation of the privacy rights of Nigerian citizens.
MultiChoice, which operates popular services like DStv and GOtv, is now expected to comply with the penalty and implement corrective measures to ensure future compliance with the NDPA.
The NDPC’s ruling is part of its ongoing efforts to enforce data protection laws in Nigeria and protect the privacy rights of citizens amid increasing concerns over how companies manage personal data.

The commission has reiterated its commitment to holding all organisations accountable for mishandling Nigerians’ personal information, warning that similar breaches will attract strict penalties going forward.
