The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has upgraded the national grid with the activation of new transmission connections along the Ihovbor corridor, a move aimed at boosting electricity evacuation and improving system stability.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the development covers turn-in-turn-out links on the Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission lines, which were brought into operation at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2026.

In a statement issued on Friday via X, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said the project expands evacuation capacity for power generated by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and Azura Power, enabling more efficient delivery to the national grid.

According to the company, the Ihovbor/Benin line is currently wheeling about 200 megawatts, while the Ihovbor/Ajaokuta route is transmitting roughly 90 megawatts.
TCN explained that the additional infrastructure is expected to ease transmission bottlenecks in the corridor, thereby improving the consistency and reliability of electricity supply across connected areas.

Describing the upgrade as a significant milestone, the company noted that the project will strengthen the evacuation of power from the Ihovbor generation hub and enhance overall grid performance.
TCN added that the initiative forms part of its broader plan to expand and modernise Nigeria’s transmission network in line with rising energy demand.
