The Lagos State Government has announced plans to strictly enforce Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive mandating the immediate evacuation of residents and business operators around the burnt Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building, Eko Hot Blog reports.
According to the government, the decision followed a detailed assessment carried out by safety and structural experts deployed to the site after the fire outbreak.

The experts warned that the affected area poses serious risks to lives and property, particularly buildings and activities within a 100-metre radius of the burnt structure. They noted that several surrounding buildings have been structurally compromised and must be evacuated without delay.

Authorities expressed concern that some shop owners have been violating safety protocols by breaking into the restricted “no-movement” zone established around the fire scene. The government described the action as extremely dangerous and warned that such behaviour must stop immediately.
The 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance building was gutted by fire on December 24, prompting emergency response efforts and subsequent safety evaluations.
The state government reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, stressing that enforcement measures would be intensified to ensure full compliance with the evacuation order.
