Fire in Ilorin Kills One, Leaves 40 Homeless and Millions in Property Damaged

A 41-year-old man, AbdulFatai, was killed and 40 others left homeless after a fire broke out early Monday in a 35-room building in Ilorin, Kwara State. Property worth millions of Naira was destroyed. AbdulFatai, from Ile Alate, Abayawo, had spent the night with a friend at the building where the fire occurred.

The fire started in a room storing combustible materials like petrol, batteries, and a tire inflator engine. The State Fire Service responded to a distress call at 2:00 a.m. in Ilorin. While five rooms were affected, 30 were saved.

“He had visited a friend’s house for the night but couldn’t escape due to heavy smoke, which caused him to lose consciousness. His body was later returned to his family after the firefighting operation.” said the state fire service spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle.

The State Emergency Management Agency (KWASEMA) provided relief materials, including rice, cement, mattresses, and more, to support the victims. KWASEMA Secretary, Mallam Sa’adu Mogaji, urged the public to follow safety practices and avoid behaviors that can lead to fire disasters, especially during the dry season.
