First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has disclosed that over ₦20 billion has already been raised to support the long-delayed completion of the National Library of Nigeria.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that she revealed this on Tuesday during a luncheon with State House correspondents as part of her 65th birthday celebrations, where she described the project as her chosen legacy gift to the nation.

Mrs. Tinubu explained that although the library was initially budgeted at ₦8 billion when construction began in 1981, current estimates suggest it will now require more than ₦100 billion to deliver.
According to her, instead of the traditional birthday gifts, cakes, or congratulatory adverts, she urged well-wishers and Nigerians to direct their goodwill contributions to the Oluremi @65 Education Fund, created to ensure the completion of the project.
Addressing concerns that her intervention could be politically motivated, the First Lady dismissed such claims, insisting that her effort was driven solely by a passion for national service.
“I want to clear the air about some people saying it has a political undertone. What is wrong with doing well?” she asked.

Reflecting on her 12 years in the Senate, where she was a member of the Committee on Education, Mrs. Tinubu said her experiences, along with her modest upbringing, shaped her appreciation for libraries.
“From a humble background, the library played a role in my life. That’s why I thought this is a worthy cause,” she said.
She emphasized that education remains a cornerstone of national progress and pledged to keep supporting initiatives that will serve future generations.
