The lifeless body of a 24-year-old student from Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, Mr. Abel Agaba, was recovered from River Benue on Friday morning after he reportedly drowned while swimming.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to a close family friend, Agaba, a 200-level Chemistry student, went missing Thursday night after he decided to swim in the river to cool off due to intense heat.
He had been with friends watching a football match at a local viewing center around 11:45 p.m. Before leaving, he mentioned he wanted to swim in the river to relieve the heat, despite friends advising against it because it was already late.
The friend explained, “Although it was late, Agaba insisted on going, as it was common in the area for people to swim at night when the heat was intense. He went alone, and no one checked on him until Friday morning when a fisherman discovered his body entangled in his fishing net.”
The fisherman raised the alarm, and locals retrieved Agaba’s body, which was later identified by his family. His remains were taken to the mortuary. The news of his death has left the Awe Street neighborhood in mourning, as Agaba was known for his quiet nature, dedication to his studies, and peaceful demeanor.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent Catherine Anene, stated she had not received information about the incident.
