EKO HOT BLOG reports that the incident occurred around 10 a.m. at a water point located on the southern side of the campus. Lekan was said to have gone there to dispose of trash before stopping to wash his hands.
Eyewitnesses said he came into contact with a nearby metal railing while attempting to turn off a tap. The contact reportedly led to his electrocution.
A student who spoke to The Punch on condition of anonymity said the vendor was alone at the time of the incident. According to the student, a security officer later noticed something was wrong and raised an alarm, drawing attention to the scene.
Students in the area reportedly made efforts to revive him before he was rushed to the campus Accident and Emergency unit. He was later pronounced dead at the medical facility.
The Lagos State Police Command was informed and visited both the scene and the hospital as part of preliminary investigations.
Engineers also inspected the site to determine the cause of the electrocution. Initial observations indicated that the metal railing had not previously posed a threat, as the area is frequently used by students and staff without recorded incidents.
In an official statement, the management of the University of Lagos expressed sorrow over Lekan’s death and extended condolences to his family, friends and associates.
