Former PM, Ghazi al-Jalali To supervise State Bodies Until Hand Over
The leader of Syria’s main armed opposition group announced that former Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali will oversee state institutions during the transition of power following the opposition’s declaration of an end to Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year rule.
On Sunday, opposition forces claimed to have “liberated” the capital, Damascus, in a rapid offensive, stating that al-Assad had fled the city. His current location remains unknown.

In a statement, Abu Mohammed al-Julani, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), confirmed that al-Jalali, who was appointed prime minister by al-Assad in September, will continue managing state affairs until a new leadership is established. The statement, signed with al-Julani’s real name, Ahmed al-Sharaa, also prohibited military forces in Damascus from approaching public institutions and banned celebratory gunfire.
Meanwhile, al-Jalali expressed his government’s willingness to transfer power to any leadership chosen by the Syrian people, signaling a commitment to a peaceful transition.
“I am not leaving and I don’t intend to leave. I expect in a peaceful manner to guarantee the continuity of the public authorities and the institutions and the state apparatus and to guarantee the safety and security for all citizens,” he said in a video statement.
“And we are extending our hands even to the opposition, who extended their hands and gave assurances they will not cause any harm to any citizens who belong to this Syria of ours.”
