The passing of the ex-national team goalkeeper, a key member of Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) championship squad, was confirmed on Sunday by Akwa United Chairman, Paul Bassey. The announcement was made in a statement issued by the club’s Media Director, Mfon Patrick.
Bassey paid tribute to Effiong, describing him as a consummate professional, a true gentleman, and a devoted family man. He highlighted Effiong’s unwavering dedication and commitment to every role he undertook in his illustrious career.
According to the statement, “The Management, staff and players of Akwa United Football Club regret to announce the sudden demise of our goalkeeper coach and a member of Nigeria 1980 Africa Cup of Nations Winner coach Effiong Moses (MON) who passed away early on Sunday 26 January, 2025 in the United States of America after a long battle with illness.
