EKO HOT BLOG reports that France went into the break with a 1-0 lead courtesy of a 14th-minute strike from captain Kylian Mbappe.
The game started under dry conditions, but rain began falling towards the end of the first half as weather conditions deteriorated around the stadium.
Immediately after the half-time whistle, spectators were instructed to leave the open seating areas and move to covered sections of the venue for safety.
An announcement inside the stadium directed supporters to “exit the open seating area and seek shelter in covered areas of the stadium” as the thunderstorm approached.
The match was being played at Lincoln Financial Field, which has been renamed Philadelphia Stadium for the World Cup. The venue has a capacity of 68,324, with most seating areas exposed to the elements.
As a result, a large number of fans were forced to gather in the stadium concourses while waiting for further updates on the resumption of play.
The France-Iraq encounter became the first match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be disrupted by severe weather.
Strict weather safety protocols are in place across the United States for major sporting events, requiring matches to be suspended when storms are detected within a specified distance of a venue.

Several matches during last year’s Club World Cup in the United States were also affected by adverse weather conditions, leading to delays and temporary suspensions.
