Super Eagles and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is under investigation by the Udine Public Prosecutor’s Office for alleged involvement in illegal betting practices.
The Nigerian international is accused of being part of a scheme flagged by betting agency Sisal, which identified suspicious wagers on Okoye receiving a yellow card during Udinese’s Serie A match against Lazio in March 2024.

Okoye was booked for time-wasting in the 64th minute, triggering scrutiny.
Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Diego Giordano, a pizzeria owner in Udine, is also being investigated for allegedly orchestrating the betting operation.
Authorities suspect that a verbal agreement was made at Giordano’s establishment and executed at a Sisal betting outlet shortly before the match.
Okoye’s legal team has categorically denied the allegations, stating: “The accusations are baseless and lack substantial evidence,” and expressing confidence in clearing his name.

Currently recovering from wrist surgery, Okoye’s absence has led Udinese to sign Norwegian goalkeeper Egil Selvik as a precautionary replacement.
If found guilty, Okoye could face a minimum four-year ban from all football competitions.
