Babangida, along with his wife and maid, is recovering from a tragic accident that claimed the lives of his one-year-old son, Fadil, and his younger brother, Ibrahim Babangida, a 1993 U-17 World Cup winner.

The tragic accident occurred on Thursday, May 9, along the Kaduna–Zaria Road.
Ibrahim Babangida died at the scene, while Babangida’s son passed away the following day after an unsuccessful surgery.
Babangida, who sustained a broken leg in the accident, has been recovering at his residence in Abuja.
While his wife underwent successful facial surgery.
Before their final game of the season against Vitesse on Sunday, Ajax, where Babangida spent seven successful years of his illustrious career, sent their condolences to the 50-year-old.
Ajax players were joined by their opponents before kick-off and held a banner that read, “Baba Veel Sterkte.” Meaning “Good luck Baba.”
In the video of the solidarity moment shared via their X handle, they also wrote, “We are with you, Babangida family.”
Ajax was the third European team Babangida played for, where he won one league title (1997/98) and two Cup titles (1997/98 and 1998/99).
During his time at Ajax, he scored 20 goals in 77 appearances.
Babangida played a crucial role in Nigeria’s football gold medal win at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.

He also featured in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2000 and 2002, as well as the World Cups in 1998 and 2002.
Notably, he scored Nigeria’s only goal in their second-round defeat against Denmark in the 1998 World Cup.
