Fresh concerns have emerged over the political future of Vice President Kashim Shettima, as strong indications suggest he may not be retained as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the 2027 general elections.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that top among the contenders reportedly being considered are Governors Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Uba Sani (Kaduna), and Dikko Radda (Katsina). Insiders say the Katsina governor’s ambition is particularly visible and backed by strong political interest from the region.
Also emerging as possible vice-presidential picks are Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin—both seen as strategic party players with influence among northern lawmakers and APC stakeholders.
Despite his regular interactions with President Tinubu, Shettima is said to be facing internal criticisms within the ruling party. Some party figures reportedly view him as lacking the independent political clout and assertiveness required of a vice president.
“He has unfettered access to the President. That’s true. He meets with the President often. But somehow, he hasn’t earned the President’s confidence,” a senior APC official told Sunday Punch. “He hasn’t demonstrated leadership or taken initiative.”
Shettima is also perceived in some circles as overly dependent and lacking in political dynamism, which may be weakening his position ahead of the next election cycle.

With the race for northern political influence intensifying, APC insiders say discussions around the 2027 ticket are far from settled and will continue to evolve in the months ahead./
