Two personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) have been suspended following an incident involving a convicted inmate attempting to obtain an international passport while in custody.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the revelation came through a statement issued in Abuja by the Service’s spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, who credited the detection to reforms within the Nigeria Immigration Service’s automated passport application system.

The system flagged the unusual request, highlighting the benefits of improved inter-agency collaboration.
Umar emphasized that the breach was discovered two weeks ago and prompted immediate disciplinary action by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), led by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The Service wishes to clarify that this misconduct was uncovered a fortnight ago through reforms introduced in the NIS, which flagged the irregularity.
“This particularly speaks to inter-agency collaboration and cooperation.
“The implicated officers were suspended by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board, CDCFIB, under the leadership of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, as part of disciplinary measures, ” he said.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct and corruption. He stressed that any personnel involved in unethical practices would face firm consequences.
He also reaffirmed the NCoS’s dedication to maintaining secure custody, ensuring humane treatment, and pursuing the rehabilitation of inmates in accordance with global standards.
“The Service categorically states that any personnel found engaging in acts of misconduct, corruption or sabotage will be shown the way out of the system,” he warned.
