Having Trouble Locating Your Polling Unit? Locate It Without Hassles Using This Simple Guide

  • The presidential and national assembly elections are only a few days away.

  • Yet, some voters do not know the polling units where they will cast their ballots.

  • INEC says this situation may arise if voters have been migrated to other polling units by the commission or they’ve chosen new voting locations during the last Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

Last week, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu said recent nationwide mock accreditation using the BVAS showed that some voters could not easily identify their polling units.

EDITOR’S PICKS

With about three days left before the election, it is important for you to know how to identify your polling unit ahead of time.

There are two ways INEC has provided for you to ascertain your polling unit.

A polling unit

THE SMS OPTION

The SMS option requires you to text your voting states, last name and the last six digits of their Voter Identification Number (VIN) to any of the lines; 09062830860 and 09062830861. For example, FCT Magaji 445322.

As long as the text including correct details, you will quickly receive a message containing details of your polling unit.

THE PORTAL ALTERNATIVE

There’s another option for checking the location of your pulling unit besides the SMS route. The option is a dedicate portal on INEC’s website.

Steps eligible voters can follow to confirm the location of their polling unit via the INEC portal:

  1. Log onto the website, cvr.inecnigeria.org/vvs or voters.inecnigeria.org. The link leads to the home page which features a menu icon at the top right corner of the page.
  2. Click on the icon, a dropdown list that features three options will be provided. These options include Check Voters Status, Polling Unit Locator, and Help.
  3. Click on Polling Unit Locator, you will be led to a form that requires your polling unit details. These include State, Local Government, Registration Area (ward number), and the name of your Polling Unit.
  4. Keep your Permanent Voter Card handy to input the required information. You can also check your full details by using the Check Voters Status portal, this only requires the Voters Identification Number and surname.
  5. When the details have been supplied, click on the green icon which reads, “Get Directions”. This leads to Google Map which provides the direction to your polling unit’s location.

INEC, however, advises voters to physically visit their polling unit before the election day, as the directions provided via the map are only “approximate”.
