Husband Seeks Divorce, Claims Wife’s Excessive Church Involvement Neglects Family Responsibilities

Eko Hot Blog reports a public servant, Mr. Aku Bakari, has approached the Customary Court in Nyanya, seeking a divorce from his wife, Mary, citing her extensive involvement in church activities as the primary reason for their marital discord.

Mr. Bakari, a resident of Nyanya in Abuja, alleged that his wife had abandoned her responsibilities as a wife and mother due to her relentless commitment to church affairs. In his divorce petition, he expressed frustration over her constant absence from home and neglect of their children.

“My wife no longer has time for me and our children; she is always going to church. Sometimes she goes to church on Friday and sleeps there until Sunday evening. She does not want to know whether we eat or not,” Mr. Bakari stated.

According to the petitioner, the strain on their relationship began around 2010 when he observed a change in his wife’s behavior, particularly her attire. He claimed that she stopped wearing earrings and necklaces, attributing these items to the devil.

Furthermore, he noted that she ceased attending their family church, the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria, NCCN, and started participating in another church where he believes she was being influenced negatively.

“I told her to stop, but she refused. It is on this account that I wish to divorce her,” he explained.

However, Mary, who works as a cleaner, denied the allegations in court.

The presiding judge, Doocivir Yawe, advised the couple to consider reconciliation for the well-being of their children and adjourned the case until January 30 for further hearing. The court’s decision reflects an attempt to encourage an amicable resolution to the marital dispute, taking into consideration the family dynamics involved.
