Israel’s military intercepted a missile launched early Thursday by Yemen’s Houthi rebels—the second such attempt since the breakdown of the Gaza ceasefire—as the United States ramped up airstrikes against the Iran-backed group.
The Houthis claimed responsibility, saying they fired a ballistic missile in support of Palestinians amid Israel’s renewed assault on Gaza, which has killed nearly 500 people since the fragile truce collapsed on Tuesday.
Air raid sirens sounded in multiple Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, though the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed the missile was intercepted before entering Israeli airspace. No injuries were reported, according to emergency services.

The Houthis said the missile targeted Ben Gurion International Airport, Israel’s main airport near Tel Aviv. They also claimed to have attacked the aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman and several US warships in the Red Sea with ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones.
The missile launch came after new US airstrikes hit targets in Yemen on Wednesday and early Thursday, including in the capital Sanaa. President Donald Trump issued a warning on Truth Social, vowing the Houthis “will be completely annihilated.”

Since late 2023, Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping have disrupted global trade. While the group briefly halted its strikes during a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in January, it resumed targeting US and Israeli interests after fighting reignited in Gaza.
Dozens have been killed in Yemen since Trump ordered “decisive” military action last week. On Wednesday, US strikes on Sanaa injured seven women and two children, according to the Houthi-run health ministry.

Additional US strikes targeted Al-Jawf province on Wednesday and Hodeidah and Saada early Thursday, the Houthis reported. Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV aired footage showing fires, damaged buildings, and injured children in the aftermath.
While US Central Command confirmed ongoing 24/7 operations against the Houthis, it did not specify strike locations. Over the weekend, US attacks reportedly killed at least 53 people and wounded nearly 100 in Yemen, according to Houthi authorities.
