The foreign ministers of Japan, South Korea, and China have pledged to find common ground on key regional security and economic challenges amid growing global instability.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that meeting in Tokyo on Saturday, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, China’s Wang Yi, and South Korea’s Cho Tae-yul emphasized the importance of addressing long-standing issues to strengthen cooperation and stability in East Asia.

“The world is facing increasingly serious challenges, and we are at a historic turning point,” Iwaya said at the start of the talks. “Dialogue and cooperation are now more critical than ever to overcome division and confrontation.”

This marked the first trilateral meeting of the foreign ministers since 2023 and took place against a backdrop of shifting global alliances, as U.S. President Donald Trump continues to challenge traditional diplomatic ties — potentially allowing China to grow closer to U.S. allies in the region.

Wang Yi highlighted the significance of 2025 marking 80 years since the end of World War II. “Only by sincerely reflecting on history can we better build the future,” he said. He called for enhanced cooperation to help the three nations “resist shared risks” and foster greater mutual understanding among their people.

Together, the countries represent a population of nearly 1.6 billion and a combined economic output of over $24 trillion. Wang said this economic power could have major influence and stressed China’s interest in resuming free trade talks with Japan and South Korea, while also advocating for expanded membership in the 15-nation Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
