Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has urged politicians across the country to view party primaries as healthy democratic contests rather than political wars.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Obasa made the call in his Democracy Day message to Nigerians and residents of Lagos State, stressing the need for political actors to embrace dialogue, mutual respect and internal unity as preparations for future elections gather momentum.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Research, Media and Documentation, Adeshina Oyetayo, the Speaker noted that political parties can only remain strong when members prioritise cohesion over conflict.
According to him, party primaries are an essential part of democracy and should not be allowed to create divisions capable of weakening political institutions.
“Party primaries are contests, not wars. We must prioritise internal cohesion, dialogue and mutual respect. Let us resolve differences through democratic means, strengthen our structures and remain focused on delivering good governance to Nigerians,” he said.
Reflecting on the significance of June 12, Obasa described the date as a landmark moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and a reminder of the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists in the struggle for freedom and justice.
“Every June 12 remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices of our heroes past and the enduring resilience of Nigerians in the defence of freedom, justice and democratic values,” he stated.

The Speaker said the annual commemoration honours those who fought for democratic governance and serves as an opportunity to reaffirm commitment to democratic principles.
He noted that 27 years after the beginning of the Fourth Republic, democracy remains the most viable path to national development, stability and prosperity.
Obasa further called for unity within the ruling All Progressives Congress, saying a united party would be better positioned to consolidate democratic gains and continue driving national development.
“A united APC will not only consolidate democratic gains but also position the party to continue driving national progress and stability,” he added.
