A suspected thief accused of stealing mobile phones was lynched and set ablaze by residents of Obio Offot in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Tuesday.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to eyewitnesses, the suspect had allegedly dispossessed unsuspecting victims of their phones, particularly targeting worshippers at the Island of Pamus Church while they were asleep ahead of an early morning prayer session.

He was later caught attempting another theft at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, where enraged residents apprehended and set him on fire.

In a separate incident, another suspected thief was caught by local vigilantes around 11 a.m. after snatching a phone and fleeing into a ravine between Eka Street and Asutan Street in Uyo.
He was reportedly dragged to an isolated compound near Ebong Street, where an angry mob attempted to lynch him. However, an armed policeman intervened, rescued the suspect, and took him to the ‘A’ Division Police Station in Uyo.
Residents revealed that theft had been a recurring issue in the area, prompting a manhunt for criminals. Worshippers at the Island of Pamus Church said they discovered their phones missing upon waking up for prayers and raised an alarm. One of them, identified as Aniebiet, recounted how their pastor prayed for divine justice after learning about the theft.

Confirming the incident, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command strongly condemned the extrajudicial killing. Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, through the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, reiterated the command’s stance against jungle justice.
He urged residents to hand over suspected criminals to law enforcement for proper prosecution, warning that taking the law into their own hands could lead to the wrongful killing of innocent individuals.
