The efficient response of the airport’s Aerodrome Rescue and Fire-fighting Service (ARFFS) played a vital role in containing the fire, preventing a potentially catastrophic situation. Emergency officials swiftly sprang into action, swiftly extinguishing the flames before the passengers disembarked onto the runway.
Dr. Mike Ogirima, former President of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), shed light on the incident, revealing that the tire burst occurred during takeoff from Yola Airport.
Despite the tense situation, Dr. Ogirima expressed gratitude and relief, stating, “We thank God. We are still on the runway, and the pilot has reassured us. He has called for the stairs, and we are now disembarking from the runway to be evacuated to the airport building at the arrival hall.”
Dr. Ogirima further disclosed that prior to the flight, the passengers had witnessed the unsettling sight of the tire issue at Yola Airport. To avoid causing panic, he chose not to announce it and instead led a prayer session. Reflecting on the incident, he remarked, “I never announced it as a surgeon so as not to cause any panic, but we bless God.”
Thankfully, all passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft, and immediate measures were taken to temporarily close the runway for the removal of the plane. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of prompt response and preparedness of airport emergency services in handling such life-threatening situations.
Authorities have initiated a thorough investigation into the cause of the tire burst, with the goal of implementing appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The safety and well-being of passengers remain paramount, and steps will be taken to enhance aviation security and address any potential issues that may arise.
