Tension is escalating in Kano as the state government and police disagree over the blockade of Kofar Mata Stadium, the venue for the annual National Tijjaniyya Maulid religious gathering.

In a statement, police spokesperson SP Abdullahi Haruna explained, “We have received intelligence reports of suspected terrorists planning attacks on public gatherings. As a precaution, we urge residents to avoid crowded areas while we work to dislodge possible threats.”
Haruna added that specialized units, including the Explosive Ordinance Disposal team, had been deployed to strategic locations to ensure public safety.
The police called for vigilance and cooperation from residents, urging them to report suspicious activities.
However, the Kano State government strongly opposed the police’s actions, dismissing the alleged security threats.
Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, accused security agencies of unjustified interference.
Speaking to reporters, Waiya stated, “The blockade of the venue for this significant religious event is unnecessary and unjustified. There is no security threat in Kano State that warrants such extreme measures.”
He emphasized that the annual event, held for 39 years, is lawful and protected under the constitutional rights to religious freedom and assembly.
Waiya assured the public that the Maulid celebration would proceed as planned on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Kofar Mata Stadium.
“Kano State has always been a beacon of peace and religious tolerance. We will not accept intimidation or undue interference in our affairs,” he added.

The government called on the Federal Government to withdraw security forces from the venue and allow the religious gathering to proceed unhindered.
As the standoff continues, concerns over public safety and the balance between security and religious rights remain in focus in the ancient city of Kano.
