It was an evening where entertainment met history as the much-anticipated historical epic, King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos, premiered at IMAX Cinema, Lekki, on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the premiere brought together a notable gathering of Nollywood personalities, traditional rulers, cultural custodians, members of the Kosoko royal family, including the Oloja-Elect of Lagos, Prince Abiola Olojo-Kosoko, and other distinguished guests.
The combination of the entertainment industry and representatives of the traditional institution, including the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, immediately gave the event a character different from that of an ordinary movie premiere.
From the red carpet, the atmosphere reflected the significance of the production. Guests arrived in a mixture of glamorous and traditional looks, while actors and filmmakers associated with the project took centre stage as they celebrated the completion of a film built around an important chapter in Lagos history.
The choice of IMAX Lekki also provided a fitting setting for the occasion. The premiere was not simply about introducing another film to movie lovers; it was about creating a moment around a story connected to the origins, politics and identity of Lagos.
At the centre of the evening was Femi Adebayo, who takes on the role of Oba Kosoko. He was joined by an impressive cast featuring some of the industry’s most recognisable names, including Odunlade Adekola, Jide Kosoko, Gabriel Afolayan, Femi Branch, Taiwo Hassan, Yinka Quadri, Tina Mba and Fathia Williams.
The presence of Jide Kosoko and members of the Kosoko family added another layer to the evening. It connected the cinematic interpretation of the story with the royal lineage associated with the historical figure being portrayed.
For the filmmakers and cast, the premiere represented the end of one stage of the project and the beginning of another. After months of production, preparation and anticipation, the story was finally ready to meet cinema audiences.
What made the night particularly significant was the way it brought different parts of Nigerian society into one space. The film industry provided the glamour, while the traditional institution and cultural community provided the historical weight.
As the applause and excitement of the premiere gave way to anticipation for the theatrical release, one thing was clear: King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos had been positioned as more than just a movie.
